Abstract:
Viet Cong (VC) Subregion (SR) 1 Commander Ba Dinh stated during a 9 December 1968 briefing that SR1 will be the key area in the forthcoming offensive because it includes the main corridor to Saigon. SR1 troops are to hit the Tan Quy intersection on the night of 29 December. If successful, this will be the signal for attacks on other ARVN/Allied posts in the corridor. According to Dinh, the VC now have a new Soviet rocket, the H12, whose great weight presents certain difficulties. Also according to Dinh, the top Communist Command does not rule out the possibility of a real ceasefire. Currently, all troop replacements for SR1 units are North Vietnamese. There are some food problems in the SR1 Headquarters area. Rank-and-file SR1 troops do not seem enthusiastic about more fighting, but senior cadres still seem optimistic.
