Abstract:
Buddhist leader Thich Tri Quang said he believes that the US in what Quang terms their secret negotiations with the North, has been holding out for a delay of several years before setting up elections in South Vietnam (SVN) following a cease-fire. According to Quang, the US position is based on their belief that democratic organizations and institutions will solve the internal problems of SVN, and that a preparatory period of several years is necessary to bring the country to a point where they can defeat the Communists in an election. This attitude, Quang continued, is the result of US lack of understanding of SVN society.
